Jen shares how to make a face mask and tips for making it more effective with non-woven interfacing. She also shows how to add elastic, and what to use if you can’t find elastic or don’t have it.
Requirements & measurements:
– 2 fabrics cut to 6″ x 9″
– 1 piece non-woven fusible interfacing cut to 6″ x 9″ (you can make a mask without this if you don’t have it).
– 2 strips of 1/4″ elastic (1/8″ will work) cut to 6.5″ (may adjust length for comfort)

Question about interface. I bought 906 and you used 950 would it help if I used double layer or should I buy 950?
What size fabric use t this face mask .
Jenny you’re a fabulous teacher. Every time I watch one of your tutorials I learn something new. Thank you!
Really nice tutorial. I have lots of scrap fabric in my quilting room.
I'm going to have to make a couple of these. I also have non woven interfacing. I just have to get some elastic.
Starting today July 23 at 6pm Ohio governor has mandatory wearing masks.
No I'm not happy about it. I'm not a social person lol. I dont go anywhere unless I have to. I go to work and home that's pretty much it lol.
But I think these look more comfortable than some others I have seen so I'm going to give these a try. Thank you for your help and god bless.
This pattern is my favorite. A very good universal fit and it hugs the face so well.
I dont have a sewing machine how can i do this without one
Great video ..i like how you are detailed . I’ve made other masks but looking for something different. Would you happen to know what size square for a child’s mask would be and can a nose piece be added? Thank you for the awesome video
💕. Learning from the context. Bias tape.
I think Jen does a fantastic job of teaching, I am a newby when it comes to sewing and appreciate her detailed tutorial. I am not as fast as she is but I am making the masks for myself and family so I am not in a big rush. I have made three masks since first viewing the tutorial and am definitely feel more confident, thanks Jen.
Very simple ideas, will try this, 👍👍❤️
I love the way this mask fits, is there a way you can add a filter pocket? Also, a nose wire?
Just wanted you to know, for me, this is the best and easiest mask for me to make since I'm unable to get to my machine, so I've been sewing by hand. Thank you.
Did you make your ironing board?
This pattern is great! I have made several for my family. I would like to make one for a 3 year old. What size fabric do you suggest to use? Thank you!
I can't find the little pocket with the cross inside. Help me!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks
Where is the template?
Brilliant so easy thank you
Hi I am new to your channel and have been looking for the free download of face masks and prayer pockets can you please help me. By the way love all of your creations I hope to get that good sometime as I am new to sowing and crafts. JULIE
I have seen many, many videos. Yours is one of the best! You're very calm and precise yet the explanations/instructions are not hard to understand at all. Love the variety of crafts you have to offer and I am grateful and wish more people were like you for taking the time to give many free projects, which i love and made many as gifts for my family and friends. You are right about the sewing machine, you have to take care of them. My 20 year old machine broke down, i guess i went sew-crazy. (made many masks, over 30 and still going!) so of course i could not do without and searched all over for a new sewing machine. Thought they had become extinct, and some stores took advantage to up the price. Anyway I finally did find one, at a reasonable price and received it right on my birthday, June 10! Didn't mean to write a book here, but you have such a friendly disposition its like we're pals!..kidding.. just wanted you to know I appreciate all you do and enjoy your videos very much. Please keep doing them and thank you so much. Gracias! Stay safe.
Thank you so much for your video I was really having a hard time making some mask
Excellent teaching. thank you so much
I just want to thank you for such an easy tutorial!!! I am not the best at reading patterns and sewing, but yours is so easy. I have already made over 25 masks and love them. The only question I have is there are so many different mask patterns out there, like the Olson Mask. How does the pleated mask compare to the Olson Mask? I am struggling with the Olson Pattern and just want to be sure the masks I am making provide the best protection.

Jen, thank you so much for this wonderful video, IMO the best mask video by far. For my 8 year old, I tried 5×7 fabric and 5" of elastic, and she said it fit perfectly. I sewed with my mom when I was 5 or so, and haven't used a sewing machine in 40 years, so am very inexperienced, and was still able to do this. For any other novices out there, I'd like to share some things that I learned the hard way: 1. I made a 6×9 and 5×7 template out of foam board, to eliminate having to measure each time. My kids can then easily trace on the fabric to help me. 2. I pin the pieces of fabric together before sewing, because when I did not, the pieces moved and I ended up sewing to nothing. 3. I trim overhanding pieces of fabric, because when I did not, I couldn't see the shorter piece if on the bottom, and missed sewing it. 4. After I turn the mask right-side out, I check for places I missed, and fix those – less to fix after implementing nos. 2 & 3 above. 5. I finish sewing all the way around before I make my pleats, because I feel better dealing with only 1 thing at a time. 6. I definitely pinned the pleats, and face needles away from the corners, after poking myself with needles facing the other way. Anyone who is a sewer does not need these tips, but maybe these will help another beginner like me? Thank you again, Jen, for this clear video, I am so proud that I was able to do this! *UPDATE* My kids say the masks are too tight, will try with longer elastic.
This is the best video I've seen. I have made 6 masks so far using this video. Thank you for making it easy!
Best video….a little too much talking in the beginning,.but that being said, I so agree about those darn pins and clips! Clips are a pain, you remove them and you lose the pleats…so much better to just do on the ironing board, can then put small, thin pins in, and not on the seam allowance area – save the machine! I’ve watched so many videos on using ridiculous cardboard templates…good Lord, people, this isn’t Home Ec in 1980…we’re not being graded
Thank you so much for this great video. So far I've made 120 masks for key workers, family and friends, the orders keep coming. I'm recommending your video too and sharing. Thanks again, Sam ❤
THank You!! There are shops on Etsy that have elastic, I purchased 10 yards and it came fairly quick..
I'm just curious, I sewed with the right sides together (with interfacing on top). When I turned it inside out, I didn't see one right side and interfacing on the other side as shown-see 6:37. Is the interfacing supposed to be inside or outside once mask is complete?
You make it look so easy.
The pins will leave wholes in the fabric…use sewing clips instead…you don’t want wholes in the non woven interfacing…the microbes of the virus will be able to get through the wholes…
I love your channel.you are so helpful and give such thorough instructions. Many thanks!!
A very good video thorough!!!
A very helpful tutorial. Thank you! Two questions: WHat is the finished size of the mask?
How long should the bias ties be? Many thanks.
Thank you so much for helping us to make masks. I love your work and when I make things for myself I get a lot of compliments in the sewing community- I always tell them is from Shabby Fabrics x wishing you all the best !!!
I'd like to know what type of specific stitching you're all doing when attaching the bias tape.
When I get this together and am ready to sew around it, when I get to the sides and sewing down the pleats, it seems like the fabric is too thick and starts jamming while going over the pleats. My pleats are only about 1/2”. Also, what kind of foot do you all use and size needle? The tutorials make it look so easy. Thanks.
What measurement would be for a child. I got the 6×9 for adults . I looked in comments but couldn’t locate the info. Thanks.
Great tutorial, especially like the suggestion to sew the ties outside on the back of the fabric mask. Is it recommended once the mask is on the face the folds of the pleats are facing upwards or downwards? or does it not matter since it will be pulled to fit on the face and the folds are basically not as formed?
Hi Jenn. I’m following your instructions to make masks. I made my first one today. I have a Viking 116 sewing machine and I’m using the “A” foot. When I see over the folds, i am having trouble getting over those folds because the fabric is thicker there. Should I use a different foot to accommodate the thick areas of the mask? Thank you. I love you pattern in any regard. ❤️
Thank you very much 😍
I live in the dairy town of Cloverdale OR. so I go to my local Feed Store and buy a high roll of milk filter and cut my filters to size of filter and insert then as needed, and remove the filter when I wash the mask, this really works fine for me.
what size of fabric do you recommend using if making a mask for smaller children?
I’ve been looking at videos of how to make a mask. This is the first one that I feel is easy for me to make. Thank you!!!
you don't need elastic don't go and buy elastic just take an old t-shirt cut the bottom off and then cut each side and then pull on t-shirt and makes a nice long rope
Thank you for such helpful video at a pace we can follow. Carol
Great tutorial tysm xx Please do i use light or medium weight interfacing ?? 💞💟💕
Thanks a lot! 🌸🌸
